-Gambling and Substance Misuse Carers Group

This group is for people who are supporting someone through issues with gambling and/or substance misuse.

We know that some carers may find it difficult to attend groups during the day, so this group is held in the evenings.

You’ll be offered a telephone appointment beforehand to answer any questions you may have.

It runs on the first Tuesday of each month from 6 to 8pm. The group is currently on Zoom however you can also dial in via telephone if preferred.

- Carers Hub (in-person)

Join us from anywhere in York at our welcoming Carers Hub – this month we’re in York City Centre

As always, our hubs are a friendly place to drop in, have a chat to our Carer Support Workers and other carers, and enjoy some free refreshments.

You’re welcome to bring the person that you care for.

-Mental Health Carers Group

This monthly session is for anyone who supports a family member or friend who has a mental health condition.

Some sessions are focused on sharing support, and others are discussions led by visiting speakers.

We meet on the second Wednesday of each month from 7 to 9pm.

The group will be held in-person, at York St John University.

We offer this group in partnership with Rethink Mental Illness York Group.

It’s not always easy to find the time to prepare nourishing snacks when you’re always on the go as a carer, so take some time out and join us at this friendly session aimed at supporting your wellbeing, where we’ll have a go at preparing healthy, no-cook snacks.

-Substance Misuse Carers Group

This supportive session is for people affected by someone else’s substance misuse and is a chance to talk to other carers and our staff.

New members are very welcome, and if you haven’t attended before our facilitator will offer you a telephone appointment beforehand.

It runs on the third Wednesday of each month from 1.30 to 3pm.

The group is currently on Zoom however you can also dial in via telephone if preferred.

- Family History

Ever wondered about the lives of relatives who came before you?

Take some time out to join Cathy Brown for our relaxed family history sessions, to learn the basics of how and where to get started and explore some of the free research websites.

We’ll ask you to bring details of at least one person you are keen to research.

Sessions are online and you can be sent an information pack by email if you’re unable to attend.

When: 10.15am to 12pm.

Carer Awareness Training

Our free, face to face, group training sessions are an opportunity for organisations, community groups or employers to come and learn more about unpaid carers and the support available to carers across the city. This will increase your understanding of carers, their role and its effect on their lives.

We will explore how the community, professionals and employers can identify carers early, recognise and work with carers as partners in care,  and help carers to maintain their own health and wellbeing.  Dates for 2021 are:

  • Mon 26 April
  • Tues 25 May
  • Weds 30 June
  • Mon 26 July
  • Tues 24 Aug
  • Weds 29 Sept

Sessions all run from 10.30am to 12.30pm and are led by our Training and Volunteer Officer Sam Ferguson.

Currently all of the above sessions are on Zoom.

-Mental Health Carers Drop In

This informal, supportive session is for people who help care or support someone with a mental health condition.

It’s primarily aimed at people new to caring, caring for someone in crisis or caring for young people. However we welcome anyone caring for someone with a mental health condition to this group.

It runs on the last Wednesday of each month from 6.15 to 8pm.

The group will be held in-person at York St John University.

- Singing for Fun (with York Learning)

In partnership with York Learning, these three free sessions just for York Carers Centre, are for absolutely anyone who wants to have fun and experience the feel-good factor of learning to sing in harmony with others!

Enjoyable, approachable no-pressure sessions designed to be fun, no matter what your age or ability. It doesn’t matter if you can’t read music or haven’t sung in years, come and join us to discover (or rediscover!) the joy of singing together in a friendly and supportive group.

In these sessions, we will practice some physical and vocal warmups that are important to ensure we look after our bodies and voices before exploring a wide repertoire of music – from popular hits to traditional tunes from around the world. All songs that are easy to follow and many that you will know already.

All learning resources and lyrics will be provided, and everything is also taught by ear for a completely accessible approach.

Come to all three sessions, or feel free to just try one.

When: 2, 9 and 16 September from 7 to 8.30pm
