Updates from the young adult carer service

To mark Carers Rights Day our Young Adult Carer staff and YACs took a trip to Liverpool to meet up with Liverpool’s equivalent service for YACs (Barnardo’s Action for Young Carers).

The trip was funded by the Quilter Foundation via Carers Trust and was designed to give the young adult carers who attended a break from their caring roles and the chance to have some fun. We also wanted to offer the opportunity to experience life in a big metropolitan city and to meet new people who live with similar circumstances.

Highlights included shopping at Liverpool One, Bowling and Pool at Lane 7, Tea at Gourmet Burger Kitchen, Junkyard Golf, Baltic Markets, The Albert Docks and The Slavery Museum. The Liverpool YACs kindly treated us to a sweet experience at Dessert Heaven.

We are hoping the Liverpool Young Adult Carers will come and visit us in York soon.

What young adult carers have been saying to us:

  • “Come down, try it and you will definitely have lots of fun and you will make friendly awesome new friends while you are there.
  • “It can be daunting to try something new but definitely go for it. You will get to do new things and meet new people.
  • “Thank you for an amazing time all of you, I really enjoyed myself.”

Young Adult Carers have also been learning cooking skills thanks to sessions provided by York Learning. The sessions have been really popular and we have seen new people attend who have never been to group activities before!
