Carer Awareness Training

Free, two-hour online session offering an introduction to York Carers Centre, and looking at how anyone in the community can identify and support unpaid carers of all ages:

  • An opportunity for health/social care/education/voluntary sector professionals and anyone in the community to learn more about the support available for unpaid carers across the city.
  • Increase your understanding of carers, their role and the effect of caring on their lives.
  • Explore how you can help to identify carers early, recognise them as ‘partners’ in care and help carers to maintain their own health and wellbeing.

The sessions include a presentation from our Training Officer, sharing of information around current carer issues (such as Covid-19 and isolation), discussions, a quiz and sharing links to carer films on YouTube.

One of our volunteer carer champions joins us to share her experience of caring, and what types of support can help.

Courses run regularly throughout the year and are held online.

-Substance Misuse Carers Group

This supportive session is for people affected by a family member or friend’s drinking or drug use and is a chance to talk to other carers and our staff.

Counsellor Christine Bailey is joining us this month, to run a supportive session about Living Loss.  If you would like to know more about this session beforehand, please get in touch.

New members are very welcome, and if you haven’t attended before our facilitator will offer you a telephone appointment beforehand.

It runs on the third Wednesday of each month from 1.30 to 3pm.

The group is currently on Zoom however you can also join via telephone if preferred.

- Mental Health Carers drop-in

This informal, supportive session is for people who help care or support someone with a mental health condition.

It’s primarily aimed at people new to caring, caring for someone in crisis or caring for young people. However we welcome anyone caring for someone with a mental health condition to this group.

It runs on the last Wednesday of each month from 6.15 to 8pm.

The group will be held in-person, at Friends Meeting House, Friargate

Some sessions are focused on sharing support, and others are discussions led by visiting speakers.

We meet on the second Wednesday of each month from 7 to 9pm.

The group will be held in-person, at Friends Meeting House, Friargate.

We offer this group in partnership with Rethink Mental Illness York Group.
